New Zealand is a breathtakingly beautiful country with an abundance of natural wonders. The South Island, in particular, is known for its stunning scenery, which includes snow-capped mountains, glacier-fed lakes, and breathtakingly beautiful coastlines. In this travel blog, I will take you on a journey from Christchurch to Queenstown, exploring some of the most scenic spots along the way, including the train journey from Christchurch to Greymouth, Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound, and Mount Cook National Park.
Christchurch
Our journey began in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. The city is known for its vibrant arts scene, beautiful parks, and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. A must-visit is the Christchurch Gondola, which provides stunning views of the city and the surrounding Canterbury Plains. From there, I recommend taking the train to Greymouth, which offers stunning views of the Southern Alps, the Waimakariri River, and Arthur's Pass National Park.
Greymouth
After arriving in Greymouth, I recommend taking a day trip to Franz Josef Glacier, located about two and a half hours away. The glacier is one of New Zealand's most popular attractions and is best seen with a guided tour. The walk to the glacier's terminal face is an unforgettable experience, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and rainforest.
Queenstown
From Greymouth, I headed to Queenstown, a charming town known for its adventure activities, stunning lakefront, and surrounding mountain scenery. A must-do activity is taking a road trip from Queenstown to Glenorchy, which offers stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range. A visit to Milford Sound, one of New Zealand's most famous attractions, is also a must. The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound is one of the most scenic drives in the world and is sure to leave you in awe of nature's beauty.
Mount Cook National Park
Our journey ended in Mount Cook National Park, which is home to New Zealand's highest peak, Mount Cook. The park is known for its glaciers, turquoise lakes, and hiking trails. A visit to the Tasman Glacier, the largest glacier in New Zealand, is a must-see attraction.
Embarking on a journey through New Zealand's South Island is a remarkable experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. This region is brimming with natural wonders and breathtaking scenery ranging from snow-capped peaks to glacier-fed lakes and picturesque coastlines. Each destination on this itinerary, from Christchurch to Queenstown, is packed with its own distinctive allure, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
