From Crisis to Clarity: Lessons from My Three-Month Sabbatical




Earlier this year, I received a life-altering diagnosis of left ventricular hypertrophy. The doctors explained that this condition, caused by chronic high blood pressure and anxiety, compresses the vein supplying blood to the heart. The heart, in response, works harder, leading to an enlargement of its muscles. The effects were agonizing—rapid heart rate, chronic chest pain, weakness, and even difficulty breathing. These symptoms disrupted my entire body’s equilibrium, creating an invisible storm within.

After undergoing countless tests and spending substantial sums on medical evaluations, I was told I was fortunate—nothing catastrophic had happened yet. However, I was advised to adopt strict medication, therapy, a disciplined diet, and, above all, a stress-free lifestyle. The last recommendation—living without stress—felt like an unattainable goal. Yet, I realized that my health wasn’t guaranteed, and it was time to prioritize my heart, both physically and emotionally.


A Realization That Changed Everything

This realization became a turning point. For years, I had prioritized the rational over the emotional, believing that decisions driven by logic were the only viable path. But now, I decided to listen to my heart and give it what it truly yearned for. To achieve this, I embarked on a journey of self-rediscovery, one that began with a three-month sabbatical.

What followed was nothing short of transformative. I travelled extensively, capturing the world through my lens. I met friends, spent meaningful time with family and my beloved dogs, and allowed myself to indulge in the simple joys of life—binge-watching, reading, pursuing new-age courses, and even spending hours staring at the ocean’s endless horizon. I shopped without guilt, explored without boundaries, and lived without restraint.


The Gifts of Following the Heart

These months taught me invaluable lessons. The travel opened my mind and soul to new perspectives, while photography deepened my appreciation for life’s fleeting moments. Time spent with loved ones strengthened bonds I hadn’t realized were fraying, and my newfound skills and hobbies empowered me with confidence and clarity. Most importantly, I reconnected with my inner self, gaining a clearer understanding of my purpose and priorities.

I came to a humbling insight: one malfunctioning part of the body can open doors to possibilities we never considered. In hindsight, what seemed like a misfortune turned out to be a gift—an opportunity to recalibrate my life.


The Struggle Between Heart and Mind

For so long, I believed that rationality had to reign supreme. The constant tug-of-war between the heart and mind had become a source of stress itself. But during these months, I realized it is perfectly okay to let go of rigid calculations and live in the moment. It is okay to pause, to indulge, to do nothing at all. Time is fleeting, and procrastination often steals the joy we promise ourselves for “later.”

This epiphany has liberated me. The fear of financial insecurity, the burden of always needing to be productive, and the guilt of taking time for myself have lessened. I now understand that balance is key. While I will eventually return to a world where the mind often weighs more, I will strive to keep my heart in the equation, making space for joy, spontaneity, and self-compassion.


Life, Reimagined

The clarity I have gained in these months has redefined how I view life, career, and relationships. My health scare forced me to slow down, but it also gifted me with a deeper sense of gratitude and purpose.


In the end, I have learned that challenges often carry hidden blessings. They nudge us to reevaluate our paths, shift our priorities, and embrace the beauty of imperfection. And perhaps the greatest lesson of all is this: our heart and mind are not adversaries. When they work in harmony, life becomes richer, lighter, and infinitely more meaningful.
